Colin Barker at ZDNet UK:
That minority of Mac users who are still wedded to browsing with Internet Explorer (IE) need to consider moving to another browser very quickly, as Microsoft is to discontinue support for IE from 31 December.
The news, which came in a statement on Friday, should not have come as a complete surprise to users as Microsoft announced back in June 2003 that it was ending Mac support for IE. Microsoft has not upgraded the software in three years, leaving IE 5 — rather than version 6, as on Windows — as the most recent version available to Mac users.
While IE for Mac will continue to be available for another month after support ends, Microsoft is advising all users to move to “more recent browsing technology such as Apple’s Safari”.
No real surprise here and the potential for anguish seems low since most Mac users are believed to have already moved on.

[...] Web site Email Battles teases the punters with “Microsoft Employees Rage As Internet Explorer Ship Sinks” which is a collection of blog posts about Internet Explorer development from current and former Microsoft employees prompted by the recent end of support for Mac IE. While the headline is somewhat overheated, the Internet Explorer story is an odd one with Microsoft going full speed to develop a web browser that swept the field and then seemingly going to sleep and disbanding the development teams. Best line as quoted in the article: “Then why on earth did we pursue IE in the first place? Just so that the DOJ would sue us?” [...]

[...] Lately it’s been a mix of good news and bad news from Microsoft for Mac users. While they finally pulled the plug on the decrepit Internet Explorer for Macintosh, they just committed to new versions of Office for Mac. Now Ed Oswald at BetaNews reports that Microsoft Quietly Ditches WMP for Mac: Despite pledging its support for Apple’s platform, Microsoft has backed out of future releases of Windows Media Player for Mac, and the company’s Web site now directs visitors to download a third-party application from developer Flip4Mac.
