Microsoft expands Windows Live Expo beta

Posted by David Hunter at 10:26 AM ET.

Windows Live Expo (formerly codenamed “Fremont”) is Microsoft’s planned “social” classified ad service and it has been in internal beta testing for Microsoft employees only in preparation for a launch some time in the first half of this year. Now, the Windows Live Expo blog reports that the beta has been expanded:

We’re very pleased to announce that today we are expanding our beta to include certain email groups from the Seattle area. In particular, we have opened up the service to the following organizations (besides Microsoft employees):

- University of Washington (u.washington.edu)
- Boeing (boeing.com)
- Washington Mutual (wamu.net)
- Safeco (safeco.com)
- Microsoft alumni (msanet.org & msalumni.com)

It’s hard to see how the social aspect will survive scale-up, but there’s nothing shabby about classified ad revenues regardless.

Update: The beta has been pared down to just add the Microsoft alumni and the University of Washington.

Press release: Microsoft Corp. today will release a beta version of Windows Live™ Expo (http://expo.live.com) nationwide. Previously in closed beta, Windows Live Expo is now accessible to all U.S. customers and expands the traditional classified ad concept by providing social networking and community features through a trustworthy, convenient and free online service. … Most classified advertising services generalize product location by a pre-defined city location, regardless of where in the city the product is located. However, all products and services listed in Windows Live Expo are geographically identified, or geo-tagged, by ZIP code, not city, which specifically defines where the product is located. Windows Live Expo customers also have the option to search for items within a radius as small as 25 miles or as large as the entire United States, making it easier to define a search. [...]
