It seems that opinions of the Origami/UMPC vary greatly depending on how much attention you paid to the cheesy Microsoft viral marketing campaign. Martyn Williams at InfoWorld:
Feedback from customers who have bought Samsung Electronics’s Q1 device suggests that a pre-launch teaser campaign by Microsoft might have backfired, a Samsung executive said Monday.The Q1 went on sale in the U.S. in May and is based on Microsoft’s Origami platform. Microsoft collaborated with Intel to create Origami, which combines a tablet edition of Windows XP with a pen-based tablet computer similar in specification to a laptop computer.
“Feedback has been quite mixed,” said David Steel, vice president of marketing for Samsung’s digital media business, in a briefing with reporters at the company’s headquarters in Suwon, south of Seoul.

Consumers who have encountered the Q1 with no prior knowledge are generally positive about the device while those who read a lot about the Origami platform prior to seeing the Q1 have been more negative, he said.“Particularly from someone [with prior] understanding of Origami, [they have been] saying ‘We expected this and expected that’ and comparing specification and price with laptop computers,” said Steel.
Of course, that was the pundit reaction too, when the marketing fog had cleared. It’s always tough when the hype writes checks that the product can’t cash.

A U.S. appeals court has upheld a ruling that Microsoft’s Office software infringes on a Guatemalan inventor’s technology, lawyers for the inventor said Friday.Morrison & Foerster said that on Wednesday, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington affirmed a verdict that Microsoft’s Office software infringed on a patent held by Carlos Armando Amado. In June 2005, an Orange County, Calif., jury awarded Amado $6.1 million, ruling that Microsoft’s method of linking its Access database and Excel spreadsheet infringed on Amado’s technology.
“This ruling signals the validity of the patent and confirms Microsoft’s liability of infringement on Mr. Amado’s software program,” Vince Belusko, a Morrison & Foerster partner, said in a statement. A Microsoft representative did not immediately have a comment.

Since the jury verdict last year, Microsoft has altered Office, alerting businesses back in January that they will need to upgrade to the modified version.

For example, Microsoft plans to switch all 230 million users of its Hotmail service over to Windows Live Mail accounts with 2 gigabytes of free storage each, matching the amount of free storage Google offers its Gmail customers. That adds up to a whopping 460 petabytes that Microsoft will have to provide, not to mention all the routers and switches needed to shunt the data around. Industry sources say Microsoft is also seeking 10,000 servers for its online gaming service, Xbox Live.Such virtual land grabs mean a major payday for Silicon Valley. Most hardware companies don’t want to talk about it, worried that rivals might undercut their bids. But the beneficiaries of the $1.4 billion that Google is projected to splash out on infrastructure in 2006 include disc drive manufacturers Seagate and Hitachi. Juniper has won a Microsoft contract for its routers estimated by some insiders at $120 million.
More details by following the link, but folks with long memories will remember that Sun was riding high powering the dotcom boom in the late 90’s and then suffered mightily during the bust. I suspect the difference here is that these are major companies buying the goods and while things will slow down after the intial buildout, augmenting and replacing will be a tidy business for years to come. And a considerable expense for Microsoft and the other big players.
