This week Microsoft is holding its TechEd 2007 conference and there’s a variety of news:
Bob Muglia, SVP of Microsoft’s Server and Tools Business kicked off TechED 2007 by detailing the company’s strategy for Dynamic IT for the People-Ready Business (Dynamic IT). Apparently it was as bad as it sounds although there were some redeeming features.
More substantially, Muglia also announced assorted product news including the official names for Katmai and Orcas as well as revealing two acquisitions:
- SQL Server “Katmai” will formally be named SQL Server 2008 and there’s a new CTP available for download.
- Visual Studio “Orcas” will formally be named Visual Studio 2008 and Beta 2 will be available later this summer.
- Microsoft acquired Dundas Data Visualization Inc.’s Data Visualization products to provide rich charting within SQL Server Reporting Services
- Microsoft announced that Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0 will be one of the roles selectable with the Server Core installation option of Windows Server 2008. The point of the Server Core is to reduce the very broad installation footprint of previous Windows Server versions and as a Web application server, IIS is such a perfect choice one wonders why it wasn’t there from the start.
- Microsoft launched the beta 2 release of Forefront Server Security Management Console for Forefront server security products and promised that Forefront “Stirling,” a new unified security product would have a limited beta in 2007.
- Microsoft has acquired Engyro Corp., a partner company that provides software to help organizations manage their IT operations by extending the enterprise interoperability of System Center Operations Manager 2007 with enterprise management systems.
- Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack (MDOP) for Software Assurance has sold a million licenses and will have a variety of components available July 1, 2007.
Finally, Microsoft also provided a teaser unveiling of Office Live Meeting which is scheduled to be available in fall 2007.

[...] Stratature was recently named a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner and you can peg this as another of Microsoft’s add-on acquisitions, much like the ones announced at TechEd 2007, where Microsoft rounds out the features of their established server offerings by picking up a partner who has already blazed the trail.
