Xbox 360 HD DVD player to retail for $200?

Posted by David Hunter at 12:57 PM ET.

Last week, Microsoft showed off the external HD DVD drive add-on for the Xbox 360 that they are planning to release before Christmas this year. There wasn’t that much new there other than we got to see the beast and its user interface.

Today, however, Yen-ting Chen, and Adam Hwang from are quoting Taiwanese sources as saying that the player will retail for US$200 when it ships. Perhaps not so coincidentally, a $399 Xbox 360 with 20 GB hard disk plus a $200 HD DVD drive is $599 or exactly the suggested retail price of the 60 GB Sony PS3 with Blu-ray player. Nominally, I guess Microsoft is behind in a spec comparison unless they upgrade the hard drive, but they aren’t forcing the player on the gamers.
