Zune Scene, a Zune buzz site (don’t be catty, it’s not necessarily an oxymoron) is reporting a rumor that Microsoft’s next generation Zune personal media player is due for launch on October 16 and Gizmodo has some purportedly leaked photos.
On the surface there doesn’t appear to be much new here – 4GB and 8GB flash players (codename Draco) and a 80 GB hard disk player (codename Scorpio). The big Zune 2 interface difference is a “squircle” navigation button that replaces the dummy circle button on Zune 1 with the same functionality. It also seems that the brown (“the new black”) case color has mercifully been dropped in the Zune 2 lineup of pink, red, black and khaki.
Presumably there’s something new under the covers like improvements to Wi-Fi “squirting” (what’s with Microsoft and “squ” stuff?) or maybe the price is really low, but so far the leakers aren’t showing much that will drive consumers. Still, it’s only a rumor so judgment deferred until the real deal is announced.
